I work with a number of different exam boards: ABRSM, Trinity and MTB.  However, it is not essential to take exams if you prefer not to.  

A beginner pianist is likely to be ready to take Grade 1 after 18 months of study.  A beginner saxophonist may reach Grade 1 a little sooner than this.  However, all students are different and I am more guided by a students enthusiasm, commitment and ability to cope in an exam environment than the length of time they have been learning their instrument.

I will not enter students for exams if I feel they are not fully ready or that their confidence may be undermined by the experience.
