Enhances Brain Development:

Music develops and integrates the whole person, developing parts of the brain which other academic subjects don't reach. Active engagement with music can result in changes to the cerebral cortex and these changes enhance skills in other areas.

Speech and music have a number of shared processing systems. Research with children has shown how musical experiences improve the brain’s linguistic capacity. Learning to read music aids the development of literacy skills, learning to play an instrument improves the capacity to remember words.

Learning an instrument has a positive impact on children’s intellectual development, particularly spatial reasoning. Research shows a consistent relationship between active engagement in music and general attainment. Studies of the impact of instrumental music lessons that children who were learning to play an instrument had larger increases in IQ.

Maintains Brain Health:

Playing a musical instrument gives a significant boost in keeping the brain healthy. According to research, most activities only use a few areas of the brain whilst playing a musical instrument uses almost every part of the brain.

Studies have found that learning an instrument can help boost memory, attention, and the brain’s cognitive abilities and help to offset decreased neural functioning.

Music lessons are also beneficial for the prevention or control of Alzheimer’s disease symptoms. These symptoms can vary from experiencing recurring memory losses to struggling even with simple day-to-day tasks.  While there is currently no known cure for Alzheimer’s, several studies have shown that music can help reduce its symptoms and improve quality of life. In addition, as regular music lessons can help strengthen brain function, it helps prevent the risk of further degradation.

Improves Motor Skills, Co-ordination and Physical Wellbeing

Fine motor movements help improve co-ordination in young children and also help combat some of the symptoms of arthritis in older people.

Controlled breathing required for wind instruments is a great workout for your lungs and diaphragm which in turn helps to strengthen your core. With a strong core comes better posture which is beneficial whilst playing an instrument and to reduce aches and pains during day-to-day life.

Playing music, especially classical music, has also been shown to reduce blood pressure and lower the heart rate.

Improves Mental Wellbeing

Music encourages the release of dopamin, nature's own anti-depressant! Playing a musical instrument has been shown to help mental health by reducing stress, anxiety and depression. It requires all of your attention allowing you an escape from day-to-day stresses and creates a feeling of mindfulness and calm.

Playing an instrument can lead to a sense of achievement, an increase in self-esteem, confidence

and self-discipline and provide a means of self-expression.

Enhances Resilience, Patience and Discipline

Learning a new instrument requires perseverance. At times it can feel like an uphill battle but that's part of the process.

The patience and discipline developed while learning an instrument will also impact and benefit other areas of your life.
